As of 2015, Hy-Vee has 235+ stores across eight Midwestern states and $8.7B in annual sales. Figure 1: About Hy-Vee (www.hy-vee.com) We’ll take a look at how Hy-Vee’s value chain is defined by using both Michael Porter’s Value Chain model (Fig 2) which comes from his book Competitive Advantage written in 1985 and core processes defined in Operations Management by Krajewski (p. 7). Figure 2: Porter’s Value Chain (Extanz.com) Core Processes Figure 3 describes the functional activities to be performed in a supermarket, such as Hy-Vee and figure 4 expands the functional activities into core processes. There are commercial suppliers such as Kraft, Commercial suppliers such as Kraft, Kelloggs, Del Monte, Hanes, etc who deliver their supplies via semi to one of three distribution centers in Chariton, IA, Cherokee, IA and perishables in Ankeny, Iowa. Hy-Vee also receives supplies at the store level from local owners.
